Prior to IV Sedation/General Anesthesia

IV sedation means that you will be given medications in a vein, and while you will not be unconscious, it will make you very drowsy and you will probably recall little or nothing of your surgery. To perform this procedure it will be necessary to place a needle into an arm vein and to attach several monitoring devices to you.  This area to be operated on upon will be numbed with local anesthetic.

To facilitate your surgery and anesthesia, it is important that you:

  • Have a completely empty stomach. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT THE MORNING BEFORE THE SURGERY. THIS INCLUDES NOT DRINKING WATER.
  • An escort who is an adult and can help us make decisions for you while you are under the anesthetic must accompany youA parent or legal guardian must accompany patients under the age of 18. The escort must remain in the office for the duration of the surgery or the surgery will not be performed that day.  You also need to have an adult who will be at home with you until the sedation wears off.  Transportation must be available during the entire surgery. The city or medical bus does not constitute proper transportation– you must have a vehicle present and ready at all times to take you home.
  • Do not wear contact lenses, makeup or jewelry.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing and something that you don’t mind being soiled.
  • Abstain from any use of narcotics, “recreational drugs” (cocaine, marijuana, alcohol etc.) or other drugs or medications unknown for 24 hours prior to surgery.  These may interact with the sedative medication causing grave consequences.
  • You must arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late we will have to reschedule. ******If you know you will be late, please call to notify us******
  • Only 1 or 2 family member/friend may accompany you to your appointment.
